Chromium picolinate in Payarmin: what 0.7 mcg really is

Quick answer

Chromium picolinate in Payarmin is the one ingredient with a printed amount: 0.7 mcg per 1 mL serving, which is 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. Glucose trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, so one serving holds a tiny fraction of a studied dose.

The printed number01

How much chromium picolinate is in Payarmin?

Payarmin has 0.7 mcg of chromium, listed as chromium picolinate, in each 1 mL serving. The label gives it 2% of the Daily Value.

It is the first line on the Supplement Facts panel, above the 200 mg proprietary blend. Serving size 1 ml, 30 servings per container: chromium (as chromium picolinate) 0.7 mcg (2% DV) and a 200 mg proprietary blend of 22 ingredients. No calories line is printed. Every other ingredient hides its amount. Chromium does not.

The Daily Value for chromium is 35 mcg, so 0.7 divided by 35 gives 0.02, or 2% (NIH ODS, Chromium). Two droppers a day would double that to 1.4 mcg, about 4%, if one dropper is 1 mL. The label does not print the dropper size, so we assume 1 mL.

Daily desk math

One full bottle is 30 servings at 0.7 mcg each, or 21 mcg in all. That is less than one day of the adequate intake for an adult woman (25 mcg) or man (35 mcg) (NIH ODS, Chromium).

What is chromium picolinate, and why is it in a supplement?

Chromium picolinate is chromium bound to picolinic acid, a form sold in many supplements. Chromium itself is a trace mineral your body needs in very small amounts.

The picolinate form is the one most often used in the trials that the NIH fact sheet describes. A 2019 review covered trials of 1.28 to 1,000 mcg a day, most often as picolinate (NIH ODS, Chromium). That is why brands choose it.

Payarmin's front label carries a claim that it "Helps Convert Nutrients Into Usable Energy*". The asterisk points to the standard statement that the FDA has not evaluated it (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). The label does not tie that claim to a dose or a study.

Against the research02

How does 0.7 mcg compare with the doses studied?

It compares poorly: the trials the NIH describes gave hundreds of micrograms a day, and Payarmin gives 0.7 mcg per serving.

In a 1997 trial of 180 adults with type 2 diabetes, 1,000 mcg a day lowered fasting glucose compared with placebo or 200 mcg. A 2010 trial of 1,000 mcg a day found no significant change (NIH ODS, Chromium). Chromium-only supplements commonly give 200 to 500 mcg.

So the result is mixed even at big doses. A 2019 review saw slight drops in fasting glucose and HbA1c in people with diabetes, of unclear clinical meaning (NIH ODS, Chromium). A 2016 review found no glucose help in healthy people.

Red bars: what one 1 mL serving can hold (double that at 2 droppers, if a dropper is 1 mL). The label prints only the chromium amount; for blend ingredients we show an even split (200 mg / 22, about 9.1 mg per mL) and the most the label order allows. Blue bars: daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies; the light extension shows a range. Even the ceilings sit under the studied doses. An extract ratio, where a label prints one, describes how much plant went in, not how strong the extract is (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).

Does chromium interact with diabetes or thyroid medicine?

Yes, it can. Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which raises the chance of low blood sugar, and it may reduce levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium).

At 0.7 mcg the risk from chromium alone looks small, but gymnema, African mango and ginseng also carry glucose cautions. Read the medicine guide if you take any glucose-lowering drug.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before you add drops to a routine that includes insulin, a sulfonylurea or levothyroxine.

A low reading is under 70 mg/dL for many people. Signs include shakiness, hunger, sweating, dizziness and confusion (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). The side effects page lists them in full.

Does chromium picolinate support healthy blood sugar?

Chromium picolinate has not been shown to support blood sugar at the amount in Payarmin, and no study of Payarmin is named anywhere.

The NCCIH says weak evidence from small, inconsistent studies suggests chromium may help blood sugar control, and that it found no reliable evidence for any herbal supplement (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). The American Diabetes Association finds no supplement proven to lower glucose, and says there is no benefit without an underlying deficiency (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

The sales page calls the formula "the best option for supporting healthy blood sugar levels" (Payarmin sales page). We could not match that to a trial of the product or to a chromium dose that Payarmin delivers.

How would chromium picolinate fit into an ordinary day?

It would add almost nothing to your day: 0.7 mcg with the morning dropper, about what a few bites of food might carry.

  1. Morning

One dropper, shaken first, swallowed straight or in water. Chromium gives 0.7 mcg. The sales page prefers a spot before a meal.

  2. Meals

Food supplies your real chromium. Most of the 20 to 35 mcg adequate intake comes from what you eat (NIH ODS, Chromium).

  3. Day 30

The bottle is empty if you take 1 dropper daily. You have taken 21 mcg of chromium in total.

The how to use page has the full routine.

What should I read next about the other ingredients?

Chromium is one of 23 label lines. The other 22 sit in a 200 mg blend with hidden amounts, so the next step is to read each one against its ceiling.

Start with gymnema for sweet-taste and glucose questions, or green tea and guarana if caffeine worries you. The supplement facts page shows the panel line by line.

FAQ03

Chromium picolinate questions, answered

Is 0.7 mcg of chromium enough to matter?

Probably not for blood sugar studies. Trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, and 0.7 mcg is a tiny fraction of that. It does count as 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value, so it adds a little to your normal intake.

What does 2% DV chromium mean on the Payarmin label?

It means one 1 mL serving supplies 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. The math is 0.7 divided by 35. Two droppers would be about 4%, if each holds 1 mL, which the label does not confirm.

Why is chromium listed apart from the blend?

Chromium is a nutrient with a Daily Value, so the label states its amount. The 22 other lines sit in a proprietary blend, where only the 200 mg total is printed (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

Can chromium picolinate lower the effect of levothyroxine?

It may. The NIH fact sheet says chromium might reduce levothyroxine absorption (NIH ODS, Chromium). If you take thyroid medicine, ask your prescriber about timing or about any supplement with chromium before you start.

Is chromium picolinate safe with metformin or insulin?

Ask your prescriber first. Chromium may add to diabetes drugs and raise low blood sugar risk (NIH ODS, Chromium). Do not change a medicine on your own because of a supplement, and watch for the signs of a low.

Does chromium picolinate help healthy people with glucose?

A 2016 review found chromium does not help glucose in healthy people (NIH ODS, Chromium). The American Diabetes Association also sees no benefit without an underlying deficiency (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

How much chromium is in a whole bottle of Payarmin?

About 21 mcg: 30 servings at 0.7 mcg each. That is less than one day of adequate intake for an adult woman (25 mcg) or man (35 mcg). Amounts shrink if a dropper holds less than 1 mL.
