Normal Blood Sugar Numbers: A1C and Fasting Glucose Ranges

Quick answer

Normal blood sugar numbers are an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Prediabetes runs 5.7% to 6.4% and 100 to 125 mg/dL. Diabetes starts at 6.5% and 126 mg/dL, confirmed by a repeat test. A doctor reads the result; a supplement does not change what a lab number means.

The ranges01

What are normal blood sugar numbers for A1C and fasting glucose?

Normal blood sugar numbers are an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting plasma glucose below 100 mg/dL. These are the NIDDK cutoffs for adults (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

Two tests do most of the work. A1C shows your average over about three months. The fasting test is a single reading taken after at least eight hours without food.

Use the finder below with a number from your own lab report. It sorts the result into a range. It does not diagnose anything.

  1. Normal rangeA1C below 5.7%Fasting below 100 mg/dL
  2. PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL
  3. Diabetes rangeA1C 6.5% or higherFasting 126 mg/dL or higher

Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. One test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.

Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and many do not know it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). A home meter is not a diagnostic test.

A single high reading is not a diagnosis. A diagnosis needs two abnormal results, from the same or different samples (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

Side by side02

What blood sugar level counts as prediabetes or diabetes?

An A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL, counts as prediabetes. Diabetes starts at an A1C of 6.5% or a fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL.

The same table works for most adults. Your doctor may use other targets if you are pregnant, older, or already treated for diabetes.

Prediabetes5.7% to 6.4%100 to 125 mg/dL
Diabetes6.5% or higher126 mg/dL or higher

The 2-hour glucose tolerance test has its own bands: 140 to 199 mg/dL for prediabetes and 200 or higher for diabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

A day of numbers03

Why does my blood sugar number change during the day?

Blood sugar rises after you eat and falls again over the next few hours, so the number depends on the time of the reading. That is why the fasting test is taken before breakfast.

Follow one ordinary day. Fasting in the morning is your baseline. After lunch the reading is higher, and by mid-afternoon it has usually settled. The evening meal repeats the pattern.

A1C smooths all of that into one average. For that reason a fasting reading of 98 and an A1C of 6.0% can both be true for the same person. The A1C says the day-long average ran higher than the morning suggests.

Compare like with like

A fingerstick after a meal cannot be set against a fasting range. Note the time and what you ate before you read the number.

The other end04

What blood sugar number counts as low?

For many people with diabetes, low blood sugar means a reading below 70 mg/dL (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). Signs include shaking, hunger, tiredness, dizziness, confusion, irritability and a fast heartbeat.

The usual step is 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate, then a recheck after 15 minutes (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows.

Call 911 when someone with a low passes out, has a seizure or cannot swallow safely.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement. Chromium and some plants may add to diabetes drugs and push readings lower (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Next steps05

What should I do if my blood sugar numbers are above normal?

Book a visit with your doctor and bring the lab report. A result in the prediabetes range is a warning, and it is also a window to act.

About 115.2 million U.S. adults are living with prediabetes (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). In the large Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle plan cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58% over about three years, and metformin cut it by 31% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program). The lifestyle aim was around 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week.

  1. Repeat the test

Ask your doctor to confirm a high result with a second sample.

  2. Ask about a prevention program

The CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program is built for this stage (CDC, Prediabetes).

  3. Start with walking

Brisk activity for 150 minutes a week is the target to work toward.

  4. Tell your doctor about supplements

Name every product, including liquid drops like Payarmin.

Can a supplement change my blood sugar numbers?

No supplement is proven to lower glucose or manage diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements). NCCIH likewise finds no reliable evidence for any herbal product (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

Payarmin is a dietary supplement. Each 1 mL serving holds 0.7 mcg of chromium and a 200 mg blend shared by 22 ingredients, so the label's chromium is a tiny fraction of the hundreds of mcg used in trials. See the Supplement Facts and ingredients pages for the line-by-line math.

A supplement cannot stand in for a test. If you want to know your numbers, ask for them from a lab.

Before you test07

How should I prepare for a fasting blood sugar test?

Fast for at least eight hours, take water only, and ask whether to hold your morning medicine until after the draw. Your lab or doctor will give you exact rules.

Skip the sweet coffee. Write down anything unusual, such as poor sleep, illness or a new supplement, because these can nudge a reading.

An A1C needs no fasting. You can have it at any time of day.

  • Bring your medicine list and your supplement list.
  • Ask for the result in writing, with the lab's reference range.
  • Ask when to repeat it.

FAQ08

Normal blood sugar numbers questions

What is a normal fasting blood sugar level for adults?

Fasting blood sugar below 100 mg/dL is normal. A reading of 100 to 125 mg/dL falls in the prediabetes range, and 126 mg/dL or higher points to diabetes, once a repeat test confirms it. These are NIDDK cutoffs.

What is a normal A1C result?

A normal A1C is below 5.7%. Results of 5.7% to 6.4% are prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher is diabetes. A1C reflects your average over about three months, so one big meal does not move it much.

Is 99 mg/dL a good fasting blood sugar?

Yes, 99 mg/dL fasting is still in the normal band, just under the 100 mg/dL cutoff. A reading near the line is worth repeating. Ask your doctor if your A1C and family history point the same way.

How low is too low for blood sugar?

A reading below 70 mg/dL counts as low for many people with diabetes. Eat or drink 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate and recheck in 15 minutes. Call 911 if a person passes out, has a seizure or cannot swallow.

Does one high blood sugar reading mean diabetes?

No, one high reading does not mean diabetes. A diagnosis needs two abnormal results from the same or different samples. Illness, stress and a recent meal can all lift a number, so repeat it.

Can drops like Payarmin bring my A1C into the normal range?

No such result is shown. No trial of Payarmin is named, and the The ADA finds no supplement that is proven to lower glucose. The label's 0.7 mcg of chromium is far below trial doses. Ask your doctor about proven steps.

Do blood sugar numbers differ for people over 60?

The NIDDK diagnostic cutoffs are the same for adults. Treatment targets for people already on diabetes drugs can differ with age and health. Your doctor sets your personal goal, so ask what yours is.
