Extract Ratio Meaning: What a 10:1 Label Tells You and What It Hides

Quick answer

An extract ratio such as 10:1 means about 10 g of dried plant went into 1 g of extract. It describes yield, not strength. The Payarmin label prints no extract ratios at all, so its 22 plant and amino lines cannot be converted back to plant weight.

What does an extract ratio mean on a supplement label?

An extract ratio compares the plant you start with to the extract you end with. At 10:1, roughly 10 g of dried plant yields 1 g of extract (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).

Think of boiling down a strong tea. The ratio counts the leaf in the pot, not the compounds in the cup.

The 9.09 mg test

Share 200 mg evenly across 22 lines and each gets about 9.09 mg. A 10:1 extract at that weight stands for roughly 91 mg of dried plant. That is a sum from the definition, not a claim about any Payarmin line.

Is a higher extract ratio stronger?

No. A higher ratio does not mean a stronger or better extract (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022). It shows how much plant was used per gram, and says nothing on its own about active compounds.

Two 20:1 extracts can differ a lot if the plants, parts and methods differ.

What a ratio stands for at 9.09 mg of extract (arithmetic only)
RatioPlant per 1 g extractPlant behind 9.09 mg
4:14 gabout 36 mg
10:110 gabout 91 mg
20:120 gabout 182 mg

Even the top row is a small amount of plant next to the 200 to 400 mg of gymnema extract used in studies (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph).

Does the Payarmin label show extract ratios?

No. The Supplement Facts panel prints no ratio footnotes. It shows chromium at 0.7 mcg and one 200 mg blend of 22 lines.

Many lines are named "extract", such as maca root, grape seed and gymnema leaf. Without a ratio, you cannot turn 200 mg back into a plant weight.

US rules let a blend show only its total weight, in order of weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). So the label has two blanks: each line's amount, and each extract's ratio.

The full panel is typed out on the supplement facts page.

What should you ask a brand about its extracts?

Ask for three numbers: the ratio, the amount of each extract per serving, and any marker compound it is standardized to.

A brand that can answer all three can show you the plant weight. One that cannot is asking you to trust the name.

  • Amount per serving for each line, in mg.
  • Ratio or standardization for each extract.
  • A lab report that names the lot.

FAQ01

More about extract ratios

What is a 4:1 extract?

A 4:1 extract means about 4 g of dried plant was used to make 1 g of extract. It describes how concentrated the material is by weight, not how much of any active compound it holds, which depends on the plant and the method.

Why does Payarmin print no extract ratios?

The label does not say. US rules require only the blend's total weight and an order by weight, so a brand may leave out amounts and ratios. We can only report what is printed: no ratios, no per-line amounts, a 200 mg total.
