What does the evidence say about walking and diabetes risk?
The best evidence is for the whole package. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, about 7% weight loss plus 150 minutes of exercise a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
Walking is one way to supply those minutes. The trial did not credit walking alone.
At 200 pounds, a 5% to 7% loss is 10 to 14 pounds (CDC, Prediabetes). Walking 150 minutes a week is one part of that plan, alongside food choices.
Brisk means you can talk but not sing. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, exercise can lower blood sugar, so ask your doctor about timing and snacks.
