Is There a Supplement to Lower Blood Sugar? A Worked Example

Quick answer

No supplement is proven to lower blood sugar, according to the American Diabetes Association. The best-known average gap is small: ginseng trials showed about 5.6 mg/dL lower fasting glucose. Payarmin is a dietary supplement with no trial of its own, so it makes no such promise here.

Can any supplement lower blood sugar?

Not in a way doctors can rely on. The ADA finds no supplement proven to lower glucose, and without a deficiency it sees no benefit (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

NCCIH agrees that most supplements lack evidence for diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). FDA has warned sellers who market supplements as diabetes treatments (FDA, Illegally Sold Diabetes Treatments).

That is why this desk describes what a label contains and never promises an outcome.

How big is the best supplement result?

Small. Across 16 ginseng trials with 770 people, fasting glucose averaged about 5.6 mg/dL lower, with high variation and no change in A1C (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

Put that next to the ranges. Fasting glucose of 100-125 mg/dL is the prediabetes band, and 126 or more is the diabetes range (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

Worked example: a 5.6 mg/dL average gap
Starting fasting glucoseAfter a 5.6 gapBand
130 mg/dL124.4Diabetes range to prediabetes
110 mg/dL104.4Still prediabetes
104 mg/dL98.4Normal band

Averages hide individuals, and those trials used root doses from about 100 mg to 20 g. Payarmin uses an aerial extract at no printed dose.

Does Payarmin fit the description?

No claim of that kind is ours to make. Payarmin lists 0.7 mcg of chromium and a 200 mg blend, and no study of the drops is named.

The ginseng line is 12th of 22, so it can weigh at most 16.7 mg per mL. Studies started near 100 mg of root (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

Keep taking your prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a prescription for a supplement. Ask your doctor first if you use insulin or a sulfonylurea, since a low is possible.

What does help lower diabetes risk?

Lifestyle change has the best record. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).

Metformin cut risk by 31% in the same trial. Pair any plan with a doctor who sees your lab results.

FAQ01

More about lowering blood sugar with supplements

What blood sugar should I aim for with a supplement?

A supplement is not a target-setting tool. Normal fasting glucose is below 100 mg/dL and prediabetes starts at 100 (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). Your doctor sets your goal and decides whether a test or medicine is needed.

Why do some supplement labels mention glucose at all?

Makers may use structure or function wording, which FDA does not approve in advance (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). Such wording must carry the statement that FDA has not evaluated it. It is a marketing allowance, not a finding.

How fast would a supplement have to work to matter?

Fasting tests and A1C show different windows. A1C reflects about three months, so a short trial may miss it. Ask your doctor how often to retest if you try any new product.
