Panax Ginseng and Blood Sugar: What the Trials Say and What a Drop Holds

Quick answer

Panax ginseng and blood sugar have been studied together, and the result is small. Sixteen trials found fasting glucose about 5.6 mg/dL lower and no change in A1C. Payarmin lists an aerial ginseng extract 12th in its 200 mg blend, so one mL holds at most 16.7 mg of it.

Does Panax ginseng affect blood sugar?

Panax ginseng has a modest, uneven record on fasting glucose and none on A1C. A pooled review of 16 randomized trials with 770 people found fasting glucose about 0.31 mmol/L lower, roughly 5.6 mg/dL (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014).

The trials varied widely. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health calls the diabetes research inconclusive and conflicting (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

What the pooled ginseng trials reported
Trials pooled16 randomized trials, 770 people
Fasting glucoseAbout 5.6 mg/dL lower on average
Fasting insulin and A1CNo significant overall change
Doses usedAbout 100 mg to 20 g a day

How much ginseng is in a mL of Payarmin?

The label does not say. Panax ginseng aerial extract sits 12th of the 22 blend lines, so one 1 mL serving holds at most 16.7 mg of it.

That ceiling is 200 mg divided by 12, because a list ordered by weight cannot place a lighter line ahead of a heavier one. An even split would give about 9.09 mg. The real figure could be lower than either.

The gap in one example

The lowest dose in the pooled trials was about 100 mg a day. Even at 2 droppers a day, 16.7 mg a mL tops out near 33 mg, a third of that smallest trial dose.

The label names aerial parts, while most trials used root. More on the Panax ginseng page.

Is ginseng safe with diabetes medicine?

Ginseng might lower blood sugar, so people on glucose-lowering drugs should talk to a provider first (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng).

Keep taking your prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a prescription because of a supplement. On insulin or a sulfonylurea, ask your doctor before adding drops that include ginseng, since a low is possible.

What should you take from the ginseng research?

Take away a small, uncertain effect from doses many times what one mL can hold. Ginseng is not a reason to expect drops to change glucose.

No trial of Payarmin is named, and the sales page copy about blood sugar reports a promise, not a result. The ADA finds that no supplement is proven to lower glucose (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

The label is the better guide: read the order, do the division and compare with the trial doses. The full line-by-line view is on the Supplement Facts page.

FAQ01

More about ginseng in Payarmin

Is the ginseng in Payarmin root or leaf?

The label says Panax Ginseng Aerial Extract, which means the above-ground parts such as leaf and stem. Most blood sugar trials used root, so their results do not map neatly onto this line. The label gives no extract ratio or amount.

Where does ginseng rank in the Payarmin blend?

Panax ginseng aerial extract is the 12th of 22 lines in the 200 mg blend. Ranked by weight, that caps it at 200 divided by 12, or 16.7 mg per mL serving. It could weigh much less, since the label prints no single amount.

Can ginseng cause insomnia?

Insomnia is the most common side effect NCCIH lists for Asian ginseng. Payarmin also holds guarana and green tea, which add caffeine, so a morning dose suits light sleepers better than a late one.
