How to Read a Supplement Facts Label: Five Checks, One Real Panel

Quick answer

To read a Supplement Facts label, check the serving size, servings per container, each listed amount, the percent Daily Value and any blend. Payarmin's panel shows a 1 mL serving, 30 servings, 0.7 mcg of chromium (2% DV) and one 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients.

Where do you start on a Supplement Facts panel?

Start with the serving size and the servings per container. Every amount below is per serving, not per bottle.

Payarmin lists a serving of 1 ml and 30 servings per container. A 30 mL bottle is 30 servings, and the label allows 1 or 2 droppers a day.

The dropper volume is not printed, so we assume 1 mL. If it holds less, every amount shrinks with it.

What do the amounts and percent Daily Value mean?

The amount is how much of a nutrient is in one serving. The percent Daily Value compares it with a reference amount for the day.

Chromium shows 0.7 mcg and 2% DV. The Daily Value is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium), and 0.7 divided by 35 is 2%.

Studies of chromium and glucose used hundreds of mcg, so 2% is a small label amount.

How do you read a proprietary blend on the label?

Read the total, then count the lines. Payarmin shows 200 mg for 22 ingredients, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

An even split is about 9.09 mg a line. By rank, line k can weigh at most 200 divided by k.

What else on a supplement label deserves a look?

Read the "Other ingredients" line and the warnings. They hold facts the panel does not.

Payarmin's other ingredients include glycerin, water, stevia extract, xylitol, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. Xylitol is a danger to dogs (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol).

The label also says pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition should ask a physician first. Side by side with the panel, it is typed out on the supplement facts page.

FAQ01

More about reading supplement labels

What does a dagger mean on a Supplement Facts label?

On the Payarmin panel a dagger marks 'Daily Value not established'. The proprietary blend carries it, because no reference amount exists for the group. A percent Daily Value is shown only where one is set.

Does a bigger blend total mean a stronger supplement?

Not by itself. What matters is the total, how many lines share it, and the dose each line has in research. Payarmin's 200 mg is shared by 22 lines, about 9.09 mg each on an even split.

Why does the label say 1 ml serving but 1 or 2 droppers?

The panel counts 1 ml as one serving, while the directions allow 1 or 2 droppers daily and print no dropper size. We assume a dropper is 1 mL, so 2 droppers would be two servings a day.
